Calder Recordings are now offering short (half day) courses in audio engineering and production. All our courses are based in our professional studio and are aimed at anyone who wants to gain valuable and practical experience in a studio environment. Whether you're a complete novice looking to break into this exciting field or you've just finished a music technology course and are looking for some 'real' experience, we have a course to suit you.

All the courses are taught by fully qualified staff.

Courses can be extended so you can learn as much you want to. Extension courses can be tailor made to suit your needs exactly. All student projects are archived so if you want to work on a particular project over a number of sessions, no problem. Please give us a call to discuss a tailor-made teaching programme.

Each course will be run either on a 1-1 or 1-2 basis thus ensuring each student receives maximum attention & practical time. All the courses are designed to be practical in nature and additional studio hours can be added (at the studio rate) to allow for individual projects to be extended if required.

Courses can be booked at time that's convenient therefore, evenings and weekends are not a problem.

Each course will be run by 1-2 very experienced tutors.


Course 003 : Introduction to MIDI & Audio Production

The aim of the course is to introduce MIDI programming and music production techniques to the participants whilst they work. The course is based around practical work in a real studio environment. This course is aimed at people who have no experience of MIDI & music production and would like an introduction to this very exciting field.

Packed lunches can be brought along. We have a kitchen, microwave, fridge and kettle.

Skills Covered.

Audio file editing & manipulation, Sampling, MIDI & Its uses in a studio, Cubase VST, Soundforge audio editing & Pro-tools use, Time stretching of audio, Use of effects & plug-ins such as echo, reverb, compression, gating etc, Mixing, Automation & Mastering.

4 Hours.

Course 004 : Introduction to 'Live' Recording & Audio Production

The aim of the course is to introduce basic recording and music production techniques to the participants whilst they work. The course is based around practical work in a real studio environment involving the recording of a ‘live’ band or artist.

This course is aimed at people who have no experience of recording and would like an introduction to this very exciting field.

Packed lunches can be brought along. We have a kitchen, microwave, fridge and kettle.

Skills Covered.

Multitrack recording, Talkback, Roles in a studio, Studio Layout, Audio file editing & manipulation.
Microphone use and placement, Microphone Types, Use of effects such as echo, reverb, compression, gating etc. Mixing.

Course 005 : Advanced Recording & Audio Production Techniques

The aim of the course is to enhance music production techniques whilst working on a ‘real’ studio recording. The course is based around practical work in a real studio environment. The course is a natural extension to course 004.

This course is aimed at people who have had some experience of music production and would like to enhance their skills with in this very exciting field. People wishing to undertake this course are encouraged to complete course 004 first however this is not compulsory.

Packed lunches can be brought along. We have a kitchen, microwave, fridge and kettle.

Skills Covered.

Audio file editing & manipulation, Applying compression, gating and effects to a multi-track recording.
Mixing, Automation Systems & Mastering, Using A Multi-track Recorder, Use of multi-band compression.
Auxiliary routing and effects returns, Grouping.
